Community-based tourism in the Mundo Maya

Travel writer and guidebook author Joshua Berman asks:

“I’m looking for a list of interesting community-based tourism opportunities in Maya communities of Chiapas, Campeche, and Yucatan area — know of any well known homestay programs? Community tour guides? Anyone the government tourism folks won’t tell me about?”

Community-based tourism has a mixed reputation. Sometimes it’s done well, other times it creates problems for locals and terrible experiences for visitors. That said, let’s open this up and ask for specific suggestions.

During last year’s Web 2.0 workshop in Chiapas we had the participation from two Lacandon Maya: Otoniel and Victor Chambor whose camp I’d like to visit.
